The word “terminology’ refers to the body of terms, words, or defining phrases that a particular subject of study, industry, or profession uses to describe itself and its functions. In this section, the NASC provides definitions for key words that it uses. Terms such as “Solution Provider” and “Channel Partner,” for example, are commonly used within the technology profession. Depending on who uses any specific term, however, it can be given different connotations. The following brief glossary has been written to make sure that everyone understands what the NASC means when it uses certain terms and phrases.

Affiliate: In terms of NASC membership, an “Affiliate” is a type of Member that holds partnership status with other Members. Affiliate Partners are individuals and recognized business entities that provide non-IT related professional services or products to NASC members. Examples of services or products that Affiliate Partners might provide to Members include legal services, accounting services, financial planning, business consulting, employment services, office supplies, printing services, packaging and shipping, or commercial real estate and leasing services.

Association: An “association” is a group of individuals, businesses, or both that organizes for a common purpose. The mission of the association can be to advance a collective purpose and/or to leverage economies of scale for individual benefit. Trade associations such as the NASC are commonly organized to further industry interests and facilitate collaboration between its members.

Channel: A “channel” is a particular path or functional conduit through which given products and services are intended to flow. For example, the specific process by which a seller delivers or distributes products to consumers is a type of channel. In the IT and technology industry, the channel is multilayered. In one instance, it is a single layer consisting of a retailer who makes direct sales to consumers. Other channel examples include multiple interrelated producers, distributors, resellers, and/or service providers who work in concert to move a class of products to consumers. The NASC serves the widest definition of the IT channel.

Channel Partner: In terms of NASC membership, a “Channel Partner” is an individual or, most frequently, a company that operates within a particular channel. Channel partners are also referred to as channel members. Technically, the member becomes a partner by entering into an agreement with another business to work collectively. A channel member chooses to join with other channel members so that everyone can increase production, functionality, sales, or service. The range of these channel partnerships can include nearly every channel member from the software/hardware manufacturer, distributor, value-added reseller, and retailer, to the consultant, service specialist, trainer, and marketing expert. The NASC fully supports Channel Partners working with its Members.

Code of Ethics: A code is a collection of detailed information pertaining to a particular subject. Ethical principles govern that which society deems morally appropriate. A well-conceived code of ethics, therefore, establishes a comprehensive set of standards against which personal and business behaviors can be measured. It is intended to elevate conduct to levels that exceed the minimum standards for acceptable behavior established under federal, state, municipal, or common law.

Designated Solution Pro (DSP): “Designated Solution Pro,” or DSP, is a prestigious designation conferred upon Primary, Associate, and Academic Members of the National Association of Solution Providers and Channel Partners (NASC). To qualify, the Member must provide IT or related-technologies products or services to consumers or other NASC Members, be active and in good standing, unconditionally subscribe to the NASC Code of Ethics, and maintain a complete, accurate, and up-to-date profile on the NASC database.

Designation: A “designation” is a title or name which is bestowed on an individual who meets certain criteria or who agrees to hold him or herself to certain standards. The NASC affords qualifying Members the opportunity to use and display the DSP designation.

IT: The acronym “IT” refers to Information Technologies. The NASC and its Members understand “IT” to include information processing via any computer, computer-related tool, or computer-enhanced device. This broad definition is intentionally used by the NASC so that the fullest array of technoloy products and services will be covered. By creating an inclusive membership base, the NASC is able to serve the widest range of IT and technology product and service providers possible.

Member: In a generic sense, a “member” is any person who is part of a group or other body. In the context of a trade association, a member is an individual or business entity that has joined the association. The NASC capitalizes the term Member in recognition of the value he or she provides to the IT and related technology industries.

NASC: The acronym “NASC” refers to the National Association of Solution Providers and Channel Partners.

Technology: “Technology,” as broadly defined by the NASC, refers to the specific branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means, and how they interrelate with life and business. The term also includes that which is created by the application of mental and physical effort in order to achieve something of value. Technology is commonly perceived by the public to include machines, devices, and tools that are created for the purpose of solving practical problems. Technology-based services are also included in this definition.

Solution Provider: A “Solution Provider” is any seller, reseller, consultant, or service provider who handles the complete needs of a client. Solution Providers can assist in consulting on the design of a solution, the sale of necessary components, component installation, and support. A true solution is a custom-tailored product or service as opposed to one that is available on a retail basis. The NASC welcomes every facet of the solution crafting process into its definition of Solution Provider.
